Our review in brief

In brief: The Épéda Classique 2 scores 7.8/10 in our 2026 test. Entry-level pocket spring mattress, French manufacturing, versatile medium firmness, starting from €549 in 140x190. Honest value for money for sleepers who prioritise breathability and French craftsmanship.

Épéda is the brand that has been making mattresses since 1936. This longevity deserves respect — but it is not enough to justify a purchase in 2026. With the Classique 2, the brand offers its entry-level pocket spring mattress around €549 in 140x190. We slept on it for 4 weeks to see if the French tradition translates into a good night's sleep.

Brand presentation

Épéda: the story of a French brand

Épéda is one of the oldest French bedding brands still in operation. Founded in 1936, it has spanned nearly a century of sleep history in France, from the first biconical springs to modern pocket spring technologies. This longevity is rare in a sector where many historic brands have disappeared or been acquired.

Épéda's positioning is clear: offer quality spring mattresses at accessible prices, all made in France. The brand does not try to compete with sleep startups in digital marketing — it bets on reputation, traditional distribution and the "made in France" brand image.

Why test the Classique 2

The Classique 2 is Épéda's entry-level pocket spring mattress. At €549 in 140x190, it positions itself against all-foam competitors like the Emma Original (€449) or the Tediber (€649). The purpose of this test is to determine whether the spring architecture offers a real advantage at this price level, against often more marketing-savvy foam mattresses.

Detailed technical composition

Pocket spring architecture

The Classique 2 uses a traditional independent pocket spring architecture. This technology offers structural advantages over foam:

Independent pocket springs offer precise point support. Each spring is enclosed in an individual fabric pocket and reacts independently to pressure. Unlike older biconical springs (which formed a connected network), pocket springs do not transmit pressure from one point to another in the mattress. Result: better adaptation to body curves and fewer pressure points.

Air circulation is the major advantage of springs. The space between springs allows air to circulate freely through the mattress, creating natural thermal regulation far superior to all-foam mattresses. For sleepers who perspire at night, this is a concrete advantage.

Filling and materials

The Classique 2's filling consists of entry-level synthetic materials. No memory foam, no natural latex — the filling is functional but basic. This is the normal compromise for a mattress at this price.

The cover is in breathable fabric, pleasant to the touch but without the refinement of premium Tencel or organic cotton covers found on higher-end models in the Épéda range.

Our testing experience

Test methodology

Our test of the Épéda Classique 2 took place over 4 consecutive weeks under real sleeping conditions. We evaluated the mattress on five criteria: comfort, support, durability, value for money and motion isolation. Each criterion was scored out of 10.

The mattress was tested by two different profiles: a 70 kg side sleeper and an 85 kg back sleeper, to evaluate support versatility.

Reception and installation

The mattress arrives flat, in a standard cardboard box — no roll compression here. This choice reflects Épéda's philosophy: traditional, not gimmicky. Installation is straightforward, the mattress is ready to use immediately.

Unlike bed-in-a-box mattresses (Emma, Simba, Tediber) which require 2 to 24 hours of decompression, the Classique 2 is usable right out of the box. This is a significant practical advantage.

First week: discovery

The first week reveals a familiar feeling for anyone who has slept on a good spring mattress: there is bounce, life under the body. No "engulfing" effect like with memory foam. Sleepers accustomed to this type of mattress feel immediately at ease.

Initial feedback is positive: the mattress breathes well, the surface is pleasant and support is immediately noticeable.

Second week: break-in

In the second week, we start to identify support zones. The lumbar area is slightly firmer, which is appreciated for lower back support. The shoulders benefit from a bit of extra softness.

The mattress requires practically no break-in — an advantage of springs over foam, which may need 2 to 4 weeks of adaptation.

Fourth week: assessment

By the fourth week, the assessment is stable: no sagging, no deformation. The Classique 2 does what it is supposed to do, without frills.

Comfort & feel

The medium firmness is the right idea for this mattress. Not too firm to create pressure points at the hips, nor too soft to leave the lower back unsupported. It's the compromise that suits most sleepers.

The independent pocket springs — 600 units for a 140x190 — do a decent job. Each spring responding separately, the mattress adapts to the body's curves without creating those "pressure pockets" characteristic of old biconical springs. On the side, shoulder and hip decompression is satisfactory.

The surface is soft without being artificial. The breathable fabric cover does its job well, even if it lacks the refinement of premium Tencel or natural cotton covers from higher-end models.

One point to note: during the first few days, some sleepers not used to springs may perceive a slight bounce when turning over at night. This usually disappears after 5 to 7 nights of adjustment.

Comfort by sleeping position

Back sleeper: Good support. The spine is maintained in a neutral position. Lumbar support is solid for a mattress in this price range. This is probably the position best served by the Classique 2.

Side sleeper: Satisfactory. Shoulder and hip decompression is correct thanks to independent springs. Side sleepers under 80 kg will be comfortable. Above that, a mattress with memory foam welcome might be more suitable.

Stomach sleeper: The medium is slightly insufficient for this position, especially for sleepers over 85 kg. The pelvis tends to sink slightly. In this case, a firmer model is a better option.

As a couple: Motion isolation is adequate but inferior to premium all-foam mattresses or micro-spring hybrids. If one partner turns a lot, the other will feel it. For a restless couple, the Simba Hybrid is a better choice.

Support & firmness

The Classique 2 provides solid lumbar support for a mattress in this price range. The spine is maintained in a neutral position whether on the back or side.

Compared to entry-level foam mattresses at the same price, the advantage of pocket springs is real: better weight distribution across the entire mattress, no localised depression at pressure zones, more dynamic support. The body is actively supported rather than passively sunk — a difference appreciated by sleepers familiar with springs.

Thermal regulation

This is where the spring architecture takes the advantage over all-foam mattresses. Air circulates freely between the springs, naturally offering better thermal regulation. For sleepers who get hot at night, this is a concrete argument.

The cover also contributes to this breathability. No need for a cooling mattress topper except during a heatwave. On this criterion, the Classique 2 easily beats more expensive all-foam mattresses.

Motion isolation

Independent pocket springs offer adequate isolation, but not exceptional. The structural problem with springs is that vertical movements propagate more than in a continuous foam block. For a solo sleeper, this is not a problem. For a couple, it can be a hindrance if one partner is restless.

Durability and maintenance

Quality-branded spring mattresses generally last between 10 and 15 years with proper maintenance. The Classique 2 should be no exception — pocket springs experience less mechanical wear than continuous springs and low-density foams.

Épéda recommends flipping every 3 to 4 months to ensure even wear. This is a minor constraint but should not be overlooked. The 5-year warranty is inferior to the 10 years offered by most online competitors.

What buyers say

Customer feedback on Amazon confirms our testing experience: the Classique 2 is an honest mattress that does the job without frills.

Most cited positive points:

  • "Good traditional mattress, you recognise the spring sensation"
  • "Breathes well, perfect for summer"
  • "Correct value for money for French-made"
  • "Firm support but not too much"

Most cited negative points:

  • "Motion isolation isn't great for couples"
  • "The 30-night trial period is too short"
  • "Basic filling compared to more expensive models"

Strengths / Weaknesses

What we liked

Exceptional breathability The pocket spring architecture offers natural ventilation that all-foam mattresses cannot match. For hot sleepers, this is a decisive argument at this price level.

Dynamic support The 600 independent springs offer precise and responsive point support. The body is actively supported, which is particularly appreciated for lumbar support.

French manufacturing Épéda is a historic French brand, and the Classique 2 is assembled in France. For consumers who value local industry, this is an important selection criterion.

Accessible price for branded springs At €549 in 140x190, the Classique 2 offers an honest value for money for a pocket spring mattress from a serious brand.

What we liked less

Short trial period (30 nights) Against the 100-200 nights offered by online competitors, Épéda's 30 nights are clearly insufficient. This is a real barrier to purchase for the indecisive.

Limited motion isolation For a couple, adequate but not exceptional isolation can be an issue in daily life.

Basic filling No memory foam, no latex, no premium materials. The filling is functional but without ambition, which is felt in the welcome.

Who is it for?

The Épéda Classique 2 is for you if:

  • You have a budget around €549 and want a branded French spring mattress
  • You prefer the natural bounce of springs to the enveloping effect of foam
  • You sleep hot and appreciate the inherent breathability of springs
  • You suffer from mild lower back pain and seek reliable medium support
  • You like to support French industry and prefer brands with an established history
  • You are looking for a mattress ready to use immediately without decompression time

It is less suitable if:

  • You are two and one of you turns a lot — motion isolation is adequate but not exceptional
  • You are looking for a long trial period (30 nights vs 100 at Emma or Tediber)
  • You want an ultra-soft surface mattress
  • You want premium materials (memory foam, natural latex)

Emma Original is cheaper and offers a much longer trial period. Tediber is more expensive but also offers superior commercial guarantees. Simba Hybrid offers superior hybrid technology with exceptional motion isolation. The Épéda Classique 2 stands out for its breathability and spring architecture — a strong argument for hot sleepers or those loyal to traditional mattresses.

Our verdict

The Classique 2 is an honest entry-level mattress that respects the Épéda DNA: pocket springs, French manufacturing, solid support. It doesn't revolutionise anything, but it does its job seriously.

Its main commercial weakness is a trial period of only 30 nights compared to the 100 nights offered by its online competitors. This is a real drawback that may deter indecisive buyers.

For those who already know they like sleeping on springs — and who want an accessible version of Épéda quality — the Classique 2 deserves a place on the shortlist.

Final rating: 7.8/10

FAQ

Is the Épéda Classique 2 compatible with all bed frames?

Yes, it adapts to slatted bases, upholstered bases and platform beds. Avoid spring bases that interfere with the mattress springs. Slats spacing should not exceed 5 cm for optimal support.

How long to adapt to the Classique 2?

Expect 5 to 7 nights to get used to the spring sensation if you're coming from a foam mattress. Unlike memory foam, there is no decompression or break-in period needed.

Can the Classique 2 be flipped?

Yes, Épéda recommends flipping the mattress every 3 to 4 months. Unlike modern hybrid mattresses that have a distinct top and bottom face, the Classique 2 is generally flippable.

Is the Classique 2 suitable for allergy sufferers?

The breathable fabric cover limits moisture buildup, which reduces the risk of dust mites. However, the Classique 2 does not benefit from specific hypoallergenic certifications like OEKO-TEX Standard 100. For severe allergies, an anti-dust mite mattress topper is recommended.
