April 2026 Update

The latex vs foam debate has never been tighter. Advances in memory foam (thermoregulating gel, 3D perforation) are closing the gap with latex on breathability. On the latex side, new manufacturing processes combine natural latex with plant fibers for more accessible pricing.

Understanding the Fundamental Differences

Natural Latex

Latex is extracted from rubber tree sap (natural rubber). There are two manufacturing processes:

  • Dunlop: denser, firmer, less expensive
  • Talalay: more airy, softer, more costly

Key characteristics:

  • Elastic and dynamic bounce
  • Excellent breathability
  • Exceptional durability (15-20 years)
  • Naturally dust mite-resistant

Memory Foam

Originally developed by NASA, this viscoelastic foam adapts to body heat and weight.

Key characteristics:

  • Enveloping and soft feel
  • Pressure point reduction
  • Precise adaptation to body shape
  • More accessible pricing

Latex vs Foam FAQ

Can you have both latex and memory foam in one mattress?

Yes, some hybrid models combine a latex base with a memory foam top layer. However, 100% latex or 100% foam mattresses remain more common. Memory foam toppers on a latex mattress are also an excellent solution.

Does latex smell like rubber?

A slight natural rubber scent may be present during the first few days. It dissipates within a few days and is harmless. Oeko-Tex or Eco-Institut certified mattresses guarantee the absence of harmful substances.

Is HR foam different from memory foam?

Yes. HR (High Resilience) foam is a standard polyurethane foam — firmer and more breathable. Memory foam (viscoelastic) is denser, more enveloping, and more heat-sensitive. The Emma Original actually combines both: an HR base + a memory foam layer.

How do you maintain a latex mattress?

Air it regularly, flip it every 6 months (if reversible), and use a mattress protector. Latex should not be exposed to prolonged moisture. Unlike foam, it should not be washed.

Our Verdict

Choose natural latex if: you're looking for durability, breathability, ecology, and responsive support. The Dunlopillo Latex Confort is our benchmark; the Naturalex Bio Premium is our organic pick.

Choose memory foam if: you want an enveloping feel, pressure point relief, and more accessible pricing. The Emma Original is our best value for money; the Tempur Original is the premium choice.

There's no wrong choice — only the right choice for your body type, budget, and sleep preferences.
