Parisian grand hotels have a well-kept secret: their mattresses. High-density springs, natural filling, artisanal construction - this is why we sleep so well in a palace. The Epeda Grand Hotel promises to replicate this experience at home. After 4 weeks of testing, here's whether the promise holds true.

Presentation: the Epeda flagship

The Grand Hotel is the most ambitious mattress in the Epeda range. While the Classique 2 offers an accessible entry-level option and L'Échappée provides a balanced mid-range, the Grand Hotel embraces its premium positioning without compromise.

Its identity: 900 high-density pocket springs (compared to 750 for L'Échappée), filling of selected virgin wool and Egyptian cotton, a damask cover crafted to perfection, and 7 differentiated comfort zones modeled on the natural curves of the human body. All made in France by a brand celebrating its 90th anniversary.

At ~ EUR1061 for 160x200, it positions itself below very high-end mattresses (Treca, Hästens) while significantly surpassing mid-range competitors online.

Our testing experience

Setting up the Grand Hotel is an experience in itself. The mattress is delivered flat, in a carefully packaged box that reflects its positioning. Upon touch, even before lying down, the difference is palpable: the damask cover has a texture and drape that ordinary polyester covers cannot match.

Week 1: The impact is immediate. The virgin wool on the surface creates a sensation of natural warmth and softness that synthetics cannot replicate. The bounce of the springs is firm yet precise - no harshness, just support. The body aligns naturally from the first night.

Week 2: The 7 comfort zones begin to reveal their full potential. The lumbar zone is noticeably more supported, the shoulders are softer, and the legs are held without pressure. For our main tester (80 kg, back sleeper), it's a revelation.

Week 3: Couple testing. Motion isolation is excellent: 900 independent springs work silently, each responding to its own pressure point. One person's nighttime movements do not disturb the other.

Week 4: Zero sagging, zero deformation. The Grand Hotel shows exactly the stability expected from a mattress at this price.

Comfort & Feel

The firm firmness (7/10) of the Grand Hotel is its character. It is not suitable for everyone, but those who seek it will find nothing better in this price range.

The virgin wool filling is the standout feature of the test. Unlike foams, wool has a "life": it slightly adapts to the sleeper's morphology while maintaining its resilience. The surface feel is soft, slightly elastic, without ever being mushy in a negative sense.

The Egyptian cotton of the inner cover enhances this sensation. It's a mattress that "breathes" noticeably - even in summer, the surface remains cool and pleasant.

For back sleepers, it's the ideal mattress: firm firmness, 7 zones of precise support, thermoregulating wool. For side sleepers with a lighter build, the firmness may feel a bit pronounced at the beginning of the night - but the virgin wool compensates on the surface.

Support & Firmness

900 pocket springs in 160x200 is an exceptional density in this price range. Each area of the body benefits from precisely calibrated support:

  • Cervical Zone: soft support to avoid tension
  • Shoulder Zone: slight decompression for side sleepers
  • Upper Back Zone: firm support
  • Lumbar Zone: the densest - maximum support for natural curvature
  • Pelvis/Hips Zone: medium firmness to balance weight and support
  • Thigh Zone: progressive support
  • Calf/Feet Zone: gentle softness at the end

The result is a spine maintained in a neutral position regardless of the positions adopted during the night. For individuals suffering from chronic lower back or back pain, this is a concrete therapeutic argument.

Thermal Regulation

The combination of virgin wool + Egyptian cotton + pocket springs creates the best possible conditions for natural thermal regulation.

Wool is the best-known natural thermoregulator: it absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp, and releases this moisture as heat. In winter, it keeps you warm; in summer, it dissipates body heat. This is a technology that has proven itself long before gel foams or PCM treatments.

The springs, by creating ventilation spaces under the filling layer, amplify this effect. Air circulates freely, carrying heat and moisture away from the body.

For sleepers who sweat a lot or suffer in summer, the Grand Hotel is probably the best choice in its price range.

Durability

The 7-year warranty that Epeda offers on the Grand Hotel (compared to 5 years for other models) says it all. The high-density springs, virgin wool, and Egyptian cotton are materials designed to last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance.

The rule: turn it every 3 months. It's a slight but non-negotiable constraint to ensure even wear. The damask cover is robust - the seams are crafted to withstand years of use.

Investing in a Grand Hotel means avoiding changing mattresses for a very long time. Spread over 15 years, the annual cost becomes very reasonable.

Who is it for?

The Epeda Grand Hotel is for you if:

  • You want the best Epeda experience available, without compromise
  • You sleep on your back or weigh over 85 kg - the firm firmness is a real advantage
  • You get hot at night and want the natural thermoregulation of wool
  • You suffer from lower back pain requiring firm and precise support
  • You are ready to invest in a quality mattress that will last 15 years
  • You sleep as a couple and want optimal motion isolation

It is less suitable if:

  • You have a lighter build and sleep on your side (firmness 7/10 may be uncomfortable)
  • Your budget is tight - opt for L'Échappée
  • You are looking for a long trial period (60 nights vs 100 with pure players)

The Grand Hotel wins on natural materials and price against the Simba Hybrid Pro and Tempur Original. It loses on trial duration and warranty. The philosophy is different: while Emma and Tediber focus on commercial service, Epeda emphasizes the intrinsic quality of the product.

Our Verdict

The Epeda Grand Hotel is one of the few mattresses on the French market to offer a truly "palace" experience for under EUR1200. The materials - virgin wool, Egyptian cotton, 900 high-density springs - are of a level generally not found below EUR1500.

Its only "flaw" is commercial: the 60-night trial period and 7-year warranty are honest but less aggressive than what online pure players offer. It's the price of craftsmanship.

For those who know what they are looking for - a firm, natural, durable mattress made in France - the Grand Hotel is hard to beat. It's an investment, not an expense.

Overall Rating: 8.7/10
