How We Test Mattresses: Methodology and Tips

Discover how our team tests mattresses: evaluation criteria, 30-night protocol, tips on back health, maintenance, and where to buy at the best price.

|5 min read

Before publishing any reviews on this site, our team follows a strict protocol. No 5-minute showroom tests, no reviews based on a technical sheet: we sleep on it, and for a long time.

Our Testing Protocol

Minimum 30 nights, 90 nights for finalists

Our team has slept on each of the tested mattresses for at least 30 consecutive nights before writing our reviews. The models that reach our final selection are followed up to 90 nights to assess actual durability.

A representative panel

We have called upon a panel of testers representative of the diversity of French sleepers:

  • Men and women
  • Side, back, and stomach sleepers
  • Lighter individuals (55 kg) and heavier ones (95 kg)
  • Couples and solo sleepers

Our 7 evaluation criteria

1. Initial comfort (1st night) and comfort after adaptation (night 30+) 2. Quality of lumbar support: subjective measurement and feedback from testers with back pain 3. Sleep independence: movement of one sleeper felt by the other (test with a water bottle placed on the mattress) 4. Thermal regulation: sensation of heat during the night, sweating 5. Apparent durability: condition of the mattress after 90 nights of intensive use 6. Ease of setup: decompression time (for box mattresses), initial odor (outgassing) 7. Value for money: taking into account the actual price after promotion

What we do not test

We do not conduct independent laboratory tests on foam densities or VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions. For in-depth chemical analysis, consult the official certifications of manufacturers (CertiPUR, OEKO-TEX).

The Mattress and Back Health: What Science Says

Contrary to popular belief, a very firm mattress is not necessarily the best for the back. Several clinical studies have shown that a medium-firm mattress generally offers the best compromise for most people suffering from chronic lower back pain.

A study published in the Lancet followed 313 patients suffering from chronic back pain. Result: patients sleeping on a medium mattress reported 36% less pain after 90 days compared to those sleeping on a firm mattress.

Sleeping Positions and Their Impact

Back sleepers: the spine must remain aligned without the lumbar region sagging. A mattress that is too soft creates a dip, while a mattress that is too firm does not support natural curves. Medium-firm is ideal.

Side sleepers: this is the most common position in France. It exerts significant pressure on the shoulder and hip. A mattress that is too firm will create painful pressure points. Opt for a soft to medium-soft firmness, with a good layer of viscoelastic comfort.

Stomach sleepers: position discouraged by osteopaths as it causes lumbar hyperextension. If you cannot change position, choose a firm mattress and avoid a pillow (or opt for a very flat pillow).

Maintenance and Lifespan of Your Mattress

A well-maintained mattress can last up to 15 years. Here are our tips.

Rotate Your Mattress

Reversible mattresses (both sides identical): rotate head-to-foot every 3 months, and face-to-face every 6 months.

Zoned or asymmetrical mattresses (Emma, Tediber, Simba): only rotate head-to-foot every 3 months. Never flip them face-to-face - the comfort layers are designed to be on the surface.

Mattress Protector: Essential

A good waterproof mattress protector significantly extends the lifespan of your mattress by protecting it from liquids, sweat, and dust mites. Choose one made of breathable cotton with a discreet waterproof membrane. Wash it every 2 weeks.

Airing and Bedding

Air your room every morning for at least 10 minutes. Fold back the duvet to let the mattress "breathe" - an adult sweats an average of 0.5 liters of water per night, and this moisture needs to evaporate.

When to Change Your Mattress?

Here are the warning signs:

  • Visible sagging: if you can see or feel a depression under your silhouette, it's time to change.
  • Persistent morning pain that disappears during the day: your mattress no longer properly supports your body.
  • Decline in sleep quality without apparent reason for several weeks.
  • More than 10 years of regular use: even a good mattress has a limited lifespan.

Where to Buy Your Mattress? Our Tips

Online vs. In-Store Purchase

Online shopping has literally revolutionized the mattress market in France.

CriterionOnlineIn-Store
Price🟢 Cheaper (no middleman)🔴 More expensive
Trial🟢 100-200 nights at home🔴 A few minutes in showroom
Choice🟡 Limited to brand ranges🟢 Multiple brands
Advice🔴 Chat / FAQ only🟢 Face-to-face seller
Delivery🟢 Free, to your home🟡 Paid or at customer's expense
Return🟢 Generally free🔴 Often impossible after opening

Our recommendation: buy online if you know what you're looking for. Go in-store only if you have very specific needs (orthopedic, particular pathology) or if you want to physically test before buying.

Best Times to Buy

Online mattress brands regularly run promotions. The best times:

  • Black Friday (November): discounts of up to 40-50% on certain models
  • Winter and Summer Sales (January and July)
  • Valentine's Day (February): promotions on large sizes (Queen, King)
  • Back to School (September): offers on single mattresses for students

Tip: subscribe to brand newsletters. They often send exclusive promo codes reserved for their subscribers.
