Best Children's Mattresses 2026: Comparison & Buying Guide

Best children's mattress 2026: expert comparison. Age-appropriate firmness, safe materials, sizes and budgets. Complete guide.

|5 min read

The choice of mattress for a child is often underestimated by parents. Yet children sleep an average of 10 to 12 hours a night during their growth years - more than adults - and it is during these sleeping hours that bone growth and nervous system consolidation take place. A good mattress is not a luxury for a child: it is a necessity.

What makes a children's mattress different from an adult's

1. Firmness: firmer, always

The golden rule for children: firmer than for an adult. A child's spine is still developing - more flexible but also more vulnerable to prolonged poor posture.

A mattress that is too soft:

  • Does not adequately support the growing spine
  • Can create unfavorable postural habits
  • Promotes overnight overheating (body sinks in, less ventilation)

Recommendation by age:

  • 0 - 3 years: firm to very firm (specific baby mattress)
  • 3 - 8 years: firm
  • 8 - 12 years: firm to medium-firm
  • 12 - 16 years: medium-firm (transitioning to adult)

2. Materials: safety above all

Children spend many hours in contact with their bedding. Materials must be:

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified: free from harmful substances
  • Free from phthalates and endocrine disruptors
  • Washable: easy to clean in the event of an accident

3. Breathability: children run hotter

Children have an immature thermoregulation system. They sweat more than adults. A well-ventilated mattress is essential to prevent night waking caused by heat.

Our selection for children (ages 6 - 14)

1. Emma Original 90x190 - Best value for money

Our top recommendation | Price 90x190: ~ EUR300

The Emma Original is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, made from firm HR foam, and has a washable cover. Its medium-firm feel is perfect for children aged 8 to 14 whose weight allows for a little more comfort.

For children aged 6 - 8, the Emma may be slightly too soft. In that case, opt for the 60x120 cm version from the baby/transition range.

Key benefits for children:

  • Delivered in a box (easy logistics, even in a small bedroom)
  • 100-night trial: if your child doesn't adapt, free returns
  • OEKO-TEX certification guarantees the absence of harmful substances
  • Fully washable cover

Children's mattresses by age: complete guide

From 0 to 18 months: the cot mattress

The baby mattress is ultra-specific and cannot be replaced by a cut-down adult mattress. Safety standards are very strict for this age group.

Essential rules:

  • Very firm: the baby must not sink in
  • Correct size: 60x120 or 70x140 cm, fitting exactly to the cot (no gaps on the sides)
  • No pillow, cushion, or duvet before age 2
  • NF Enfant certified or European equivalent

From 18 months to 3 years: transition bed

Generally 70x140 cm, firm to very firm. The baby is starting to roll over on their own - firmness remains essential.

From 3 to 8 years: first children's bed

Size 80x160 or 90x190 cm. Firm feel. This is where you can start considering "mainstream" mattresses in a firm version.

From 8 to 12 years: junior bed

Size 90x190 or 90x200 cm. Firm to medium-firm feel. The body is growing, support needs are evolving.

From 12 to 16 years: adult transition

Size 90x200 cm. Medium-firm feel. The skeleton is almost fully formed; you can start adapting comfort to personal preferences.

A well-chosen children's mattress can last 8 to 10 years with proper care (mattress protector required, regular airing). Over 10 years, an investment of EUR300 works out to EUR30/year - or 8 cents per night.

BudgetOptions
EUR80 - 200Basic firm foam, good for a spare room or very tight budget
EUR200 - 400Certified HR foam (Emma, Bultex). Our recommendation for most children
EUR400 - 600Junior hybrid or pocket spring mattress (better durability)

Our verdict

For children aged 6 to 14, the number one criterion is firmness. A firm mattress in OEKO-TEX certified HR foam is the universal standard. The Emma Original 90x190 is our top value-for-money recommendation.

Don't forget the mattress protector: essential for hygiene and to preserve the life of the mattress against nighttime accidents, sweating, and dirt.
